Starting the School Year… On Strike…!

I was not at all surprised when I found out that we were going to be going on strike.  It was as if the district set it up for us to go on strike even back when they created the calendar.  Of course, I still did not want to strike but such is life, and I made the most of the time.  I spent the time walking the line getting to know my co-workers better and getting a lot of exercise.  The weather was absolutely beautiful, and I walked 7-12 miles a day.

The district was not willing to meet at the table and was really hoping to turn the public against us but thankfully we had a lot of support which was obvious by how much love we received each day.  Finally, they removed their lawyer from the bargaining committee and finally met in person and negotiations finally started happening over Memorial Day weekend.  By Tuesday, they had negotiated a contract that we voted on and approved on Wednesday.  It came at just the right time, as we were getting exhausted and tired of walking the line all day every day.

The students finally started back on Thursday, September 8th and the next challenge was to figure out how we would make up those days. Most districts didn’t start until around that time so I knew that we would be able to figure it out. Even with the crazy start to the school year, it was a smooth first day back for the students.  I’m excited what is to happen this year as we integrate the students more throughout the program. I’m looking forward to a good year after the last few crazy covid years.
